Zoe Ze Zhou is a multimedia artist with an MFA from CalArts and a BFA from School of the Art Institute of Chicago.
Zhou’s immersive installations transcend conventional limits, exploring the essence of life through a blend of multimedia elements. Inspired by personal experiences, her work often delves into themes of loss of life, fragility of human connections and criticizing anthropocentrism.
Through innovative use of materials and themes, Zhou’s work seeks to redefine contemporary materials and offers audiences a deeper exploration of taboo subjects such as morality and objectification of the human form.
Ponytail
As viewers enter the space, they only realized a white wall adorned with two identical ponytails.As they navigate further, uncovers a horse and a woman, both leaning against the wall atteched to ponytail. By recognizing the shared vulnerability and resilience between the woman and the horse, the installation prompts contemplation on gender equality and therecognition of agency across species.

HAIR FROM YOU
For the past 7 years, I've been working on Hair from You, a project where I use my hair to stitch together memories of my deceased family members. My hair, containing their DNA, allows them to be part of the creation even without their knowledge.
The process is emotionally and physically exhausting, mirroring my struggle to reconnect with them while carrying guilt. The varying hair colors reflect the passage of time, making this a lifelong endeavor, as those I've lost will always remain in me.
